A Heart For The Lost

‘During the first year of the reign of King Cyrus of Persia, the Lord fulfilled Jeremiah’s prophecy by giving King Cyrus the desire to send this proclamation throughout his empire (he also put it into the permanent records of the realm):

“Cyrus, king of Persia, hereby announces that Jehovah, the God of heaven who gave me my vast empire, has now given me the responsibility of building him a Temple in Jerusalem, in the land of Judah.” Ezra 1:1-2 TLB

God stirred up a heathen king to do will of God. Cyrus recognised God’s provision in his life, he recognised that God was the source of his power and he committed himself to doing the will of God. Are we willing to recognise God for who he is in our lives? Are we willing to do his will? Jesus did. He said "I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me." John 6:38 NIV

‘For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’ Luke 19:10 NIV

Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Our God is always looking for lost things. Our goal should be to continually be shifting our hearts one step closer to having a greater heart for the lost.

Go and pray.

God has told his church there are two keys to expanding His Kingdom.

'Go into all the world and preach gospel the gospel to all creation.' Mark 16:15 NIV

'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.' Mark 11:17
NIV

Go and pray.

So simple; go and pray. If we do both of these our world would be reached with gospel and yet too often both are neglected. This is our Great Commission given to his church by Jesus himself. And yet, in some places the Great Commission has now become the great omission.

The Great Commission

It is called the Great Commission for 4 reasons.

  • Its scope - it covers whole world.

  • Its numbers to be touched; its reach - all creation, billions of people.

  • Its degree of power - it will be accompanied by signs, wonders, miracles
.

  • Its significance- it is the greatest cause on earth.

To fulfill the commission we need to seek God first; his hand, his face and his heart.

Three aspects of seeking God.

1. The Hand Of God-

We serve a generous God who loves to bless us.

'You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.' Psalm 145:16 NIV

2. The Face Of God

"Your face, Lord, I will seek.' Psalm 27:8 NIV

3. The Heart Of God

The heart or passion of God – what is His great passion? The lost.

We must seek him first. We cannot fulfill the commission in our own strength. Just like the early church, we need his help which he said we would receive after we seek him first.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NIV

The apostles, the early church, and believers down through history have kept the flame of the Great Commission burning. Now it is our turn.

What Can You Do?

What can you do to help reach lost people and develop a heart for lost?

1.  Accept

Accept that you are responsible for fulfilling the ministry God has given you of doing what you can to reconcile people to God.

'All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.' 2 Cor. 5:18-20 NIV

2.  Pray

'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.' Mark 11:17
NIV

3. Don’t postpone

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." John 4: 34-35 NIV

4. Invite people to church.

'How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?' Romans 10:14-15 NIV

5. Pray during altar calls

6. Attend New Zealand and Beyond 2017

7. Fill in the Salvation of Friends goal form
