Breakthrough & Presence Through Worship

worship-power.jpgImagine yourself standing outside the White House. You have a few health and financial issues to discuss with President Barak Obama. So you tell the guard I would like to see the president please. He asks for your name, looks at his list and says "sorry! we have no record of your appointment". You ask how can I get one. Through his office staff, he replies. Could I have their number. No its restricted. Then how can I get it. Its better to wait till they call you. You reply but they don’t know me. The guard says, then they probably won’t call.

You are disappointed thinking you were so close to his front door. You were  separated by a fence, guard, staff and Secret Service. Also invisible barriers. You have no status. Your chat with the president is not going to happen.  Unless he takes the initiative.  He sees you and says to his chief of staff "see that person! tell him I want to talk with him for a minute".  Immediately all barriers will drop and you can head for White House. You feel special, chosen, because someone up there saw you down here and made it possible for you to come in. We all know you will never be invited to see the president. But when it comes to God you can walk straight in because the invitation has already come. No barriers, no fence, He has invited you in. What once separated you, has been removed.

Heb 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We can't get to see the president, but we can get an audience with God. How can that be possible. Something happened when Jesus died on the cross that opened door for you and me to enter the very presence of God.

Matthew 27:50-51 (NKJV)
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

The curtain was in the temple and  hung before holy of holies. Only the priest could enter the holy place. Only the high priest on one day a year could enter the holy of holies. No one else could enter because the awesome presence of God was there. Two of Aaron’s sons died when they entered Holy of holies. The curtain boldly declared "this far and no further".

What did 1500 years of a curtain in front of the Holy of Holies communicate?  Simple. God is holy, separate from us and unapproachable. Stay away! This seems to be our problem.  We know God is good, we know we are not, and we can feel far from God, limited access. But then the cross!! When Jesus died on cross, the curtain that blocked entrance into presence of God was torn in two from top to bottom. It's as if hands of heaven had been gripping the veil for thousands of years waiting for this moment. The curtain was about 60ft tall and 30ft wide,12 inches thick.

if you had 2 teams of horses pulling the curtain they would not be able to rip it in two. Only God could have ripped the curtain in two. We can’t get to see the president but we can enter the presence of God. Why? Because an astronomical price has been paid, worth more than all wealth in the world. Jesus died on the cross, shed His blood so you and I could enter His presence at any time. The barrier of sin is now down. But we can put the barrier back up. There can be a curtain in our hearts. We allow our failures & mistakes to keep us from God. Our guilty conscience becomes a curtain that separates us from God and we feel unworthy to enter His presence.

Eg- We live in a world of closed doors & shut doors. Most homes are fenced in and closed to others. Our society is full of rejection, we often feel not accepted, not welcome, not worthy. For God to then give us an open door into His presence is not easy to comprehend.

Key to Entering God’s Presence is Worship

Psalm 22:3 (NKJV) But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel.

The whole purpose of singing and worship is to make way for the King to come and work among us.  When we don’t understand that music is a means of bringing the power and presence of God into our midst to work miracles and change lives then our singing is in danger of becoming a form, ritual, words.  Something to get through before the Word is preached.

a. Good songs does not mean good worship.
b. Good music does not mean good worship.
c. Good service does not mean good worship. Sometimes it’s the program that was good. Its a danger when services are planned to please the people more than to please God.  In our weakness, we can easily focus more on the presentation of the service than on the presence of God.

The Christian music industry in now a multi million dollar industry. The danger we face is worshipping the worship. Then music becomes an idol. God is wanting to restore true worship which is not just about songs and music. It’s about people whose character is consistent with the songs.

There are 3 stages to worship. The Temple had 3 rooms, Outer Courts, Holy Place, Holy of Holies where the Manifest presence of God was.

- Psalm 100:4 (NKJV)

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

This involves the Body which is comparable to the Outer Court. Thanksgiving is for what God has done for us. We begin to enter God's presence.

- involves our soul and is comparable to the Holy Place. We praise God for His character, who He is. This often involves  expression, singing, raising hands, clapping and so on.

A lady said to Jack Hayford, "if you didn’t invite people to raise their hands in worship I think our church would grow faster. You might injure some peoples pride". His answer, injure pride!! I was hoping to kill it altogether.

Eg- A couple and their mother prayed 30yrs for their alcoholic father with no result. They heard about power of praise and decided to do it. Soon the alcoholic father was saved and set free from alcohol.

- Holy of Holies is the third stage we enter into worship which involves our spirit. We enter deeper into His presence. Our spirit makes contact with God and we find ourselves easily worshipping.

Worship is to adore, magnify, exalt. It takes conscious effort and focused concentration on God. Our mind is not in the bakery or going around the world.

- We can enjoy the services and music, without opening our spirit to God or entering into the presence of God. We need to block out distractions. Close our eyes. The meaning of worship (Shachah) is to bow down or prostrate. Say to God I surrender all to you. That attitude opens our spirit to the presence of God.

Worship is really not about music, being contemporary, great songleading, though all of that can be important. It’s about bowing in surrender to God and exalting Him. About God coming in power, working miracles.

1. Worship gives strength -
Psalm 8:2 (NKJV)

2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

Jesus said in Matt 21:16 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise. Praise & worship releases strength in us.

- Lawyer Spafford lost everything in a Chicago fire. He sent his wife and 4 kids overseas. The boat they were traveling in sank and the 4 children drowned. In such a midnight hour he worshipped God as he wrote the famous hymn "When peace like a river attendeth my way when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say, it is well it is well with my soul." Worship poured strength into him.

2. Worship can set us free and transform us

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NKJV)
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

One of the major things that worship will do is change us from glory to glory, set us free from sin. Its like an impartation of God into our lives.

3.Worship releases miracles, healing

A lady had her 4th child. She deeply resented it. She heard about the power of song and committed herself to praising God for her 4th child. Few months later she got cancer in her arms. Her 4 yr old asked her if he could pray for Jesus to heal her arms. She said Yes and her 4yr old prayed. The mother was totally healed. There is Power in praise.

Paul and Silas in prison when they sang there was an earthquake and they experienced a mighty breakthrough.

What does the torn curtain signify for us. We are welcome  to enter into God's presence, any day, any time.  All barriers are removed. The barrier of sin is down. He has removed the curtain. At least forty one psalms tell us to sing to the Lord. It is not optional whether we sing or not. It is commanded. We can be reluctant to sing because we are conscious of our voice. Well!  God is not looking for the next NZ idol. God wants a full expression of heartfelt worship from every believer. The bible openly teaches us to be expressive in our worship, clap, raise hands, shout. Physical action like clapping, shouting, raising hands and quoting scripture can be the moment of a breakthrough in your life.

Isaiah 61:3  and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- a garment of praise  instead of a spirit of despair. Never underestimate it’s awesome power.

There is Great power in worship and music

Eg- David had a child by Bathsheba that died. His response was
2 Sam12:20 David arose from the ground, went into house of Lord and worshiped.

When some people struggle they stay away from church or stop coming, yet what they need is worship that brings strength and breakthrough.

The direction worship needs to take is that it becomes more and more about surrender to God and the release of the anointing to work miracles. There is a danger of losing our focus from the wonder of God, eternity, heaven, to a focus on this life and how God can bless us on earth. The Focus is me and here, and not God and there - eternity. With it we can lose our voice of praise. We need to be caught in the wonder and majesty of the God we serve.

He is the bright morning star, alpha and omega, lily of the valley, soon coming king, prince of peace, mighty god, healer, deliverer, wonderful counsellor, everlasting father, King of Kings and Lord of lords. Our praise and worship should never be boring. We should need to be restrained. Our times of singing and worship are to be times for God to turn up and minister by the power of His Spirit. Where the needs you came with can be met. It’s about God coming with His presence and power.

As we learn to worship in spirit and in truth we will receive great strength, our lives will be transformed increasingly into the likeness of Jesus, and we will see more miracles, healings and power of God. Its time to worship the King.
