Impact of Thoughts, part 1

What’s on your mind, what are you thinking about?

How would you feel if we all had to walk around with a screen on our foreheads broadcasting our every thought to the world. Uncomfortable?

Now imagine if your every thought was obedient to Christ.

"Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," 2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV

That is a real challenge for all of us.

Action follows thought

A powerful truth that operates in all our lives. Have you ever watched TV and felt hungry because you've just seen a food ad? You’re not alone. Our thoughts and the suggestions we hear have a significant impact on what we do. Imagine what your life be like in 20 years time? Examine your thoughts, the things you spend time thinking about; and that will give you a picture. The Bible says: "for as he thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7 NKJV We become like what we think about.

True christian thinking is a rare thing and we need to remember first commandment.

"Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment." Matthew 22:36-38 NKJV

Emotions follow thought

Have you ever been cut off while you're driving? Ever been crossed or cheated by someone? We have to decide how we will respond. Do we let it go or do we let it ruin our day?

There were  two people suffering from the same serious struggle. One ended up bitter and one full of peace, the only difference was in their thoughts and attitude. The trial was the same, the difference was in their minds. "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Romans 8:6 NKJV There is the answer right there - be spiritually minded.

It's not always easy to be spiritually minded especially if your life has been full of negative situations; and God won't condemn you if you struggle but the key is to try and make the effort. God will honour that. Sometimes when we're facing a challenging situation it can be difficult to hand control over to God; but if you're listening to His voice you'll hear him saying "trust me".

The Power of Thankfulness

"...because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.""And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;" Romans 1:21‭, ‬28 NKJV

There was an experiment run where people who repeated the sentence 'I’m glad I’m not...' five times ended up more happy than when they started. Conversely, people who said 'I wish I were...' five times ended up more unhappy than before. That's the power of our words and our thoughts.

How do you maintain thinking good thoughts? Make it a habit to thank God daily for the good things in your life. You will always feel better and feel strengthened when you do. Think of the prophecies you have received, encourage yourself daily in the Lord and you will feel better.

Relationship Breakdown

A major reason for relationships breakdown is an attack on our minds about people. Satan means separator, accuser. He breaks up relationships, especially godly relationships, by accusing people in our minds.

"Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down." Revelation 12:10‭ NKJV

There is a story of a pastor’s wife who was plagued by her thoughts. The thoughts that she was missing out on life because she was a christian, she rejected the thoughts, but they kept returning. Eventually she left her husband, left her church and left her faith all because of a thought. The devil will whisper to us that following Christ, serving him, going to church regularly is a waste of our valuable time and effort. Don't believe it. Reject the thoughts before you find yourself wavering.

It pays to live for God, it pays to give to the work of God, it pays to serve God, it pays to get to church every Sunday, Following God passionately is the most satisfying, fulfilling, exciting life on the planet. The world promises so much but it delivers virtually nothing. God delivers on His promises, there is no better life. Do not listen to the lies of the devil; and it starts in the mind.

Our nation is full of back-slidden christians who have, somewhere along the line, allowed negative thoughts into their minds. Our thoughts can draw us closer to or away from God. If we often think about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit we develop a God consciousness; that's why praising and worshipping God is so important, it fixes our minds on God and like David said: it stops us from being shaken, "I saw the Lord always before me.  Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken." Acts 2:25 NIV & Psalm 16:8 NIV

In a crisis, listening for His voice and guarding our thoughts is crucial to the maintenance of our peace, our confidence. It is our choice which voice we listen to.

Paralysed Potential

If we don't guard our minds it can paralyse our potential. We are capable of doing far more than we are doing now. It doesn't necessarily mean working harder but it means knowing our capacity and realising that because God has made us we have a tremendous ability to do more through Him than we thought possible. Satan is always attacking our minds, always undermining our confidence in God, always trying to paralyse our potential. "Resist the devil and he will flee." James 4:7 NKJV

Wrong thoughts have a way of limiting our thinking and we need to stop it; stop thinking 'I can't' and start thinking 'I can'; start declaring "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13 NIV

Few things are as important as controlling your thoughts. It is hard initially because we have not been disciplined in our thoughts and we let any old thoughts enter, but there is good news for us. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."  2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Your MVP

Your mind is a key player as to the quality of your life. You can change the quality of your life today by changing your thoughts. By being spiritually minded, by starting to think as God wants you to think. It won't necessarily take your problems away, but you will enjoy your life more, you will know more peace in your circumstances because that's what the Bible teaches us.

The more you win in the mind the more you will win in life. Remember God's word, his promises about your mind, practice thankfulness daily, believe what he has said, believe that if he has called you into something he has also equipped you too.
