Impact of Thoughts Part 2

One of greatest battles we face in life is for the control of our thoughts. The happiness of our lives depends on the quality of our thoughts.

The relationship between a thought and an act is expressed in this poem.

Sow a thought, reap a word;
Sow a word, reap an act;
Sow an act, reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a destiny.
It all begins with a thought.

"casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," 2 Corinthians 10:5

Defense Mechanisms:

It is said our minds are like a computer and like a computer can become infected with viruses of bad thoughts, defense mechanisms we use to protect ourselves.

Independence - no one will tell me what to do, I will do it my way.

Dishonesty – we lie to ourselves in order to hide from the truth about ourselves that we can’t bear to face. People with addictions can be like this.

Denial - a refusal to accept the facts of the way things really are.

Fantasy - escaping the real world and living in one’s imagination.

Emotional Insulation - we withdraw from others to avoid rejection.

Projection - blaming others for our problems.

Martin Luther wrote, “The Devil throws hideous thoughts into the soul—hatred of God, blasphemy, and despair. When I awake at night, the Devil tarries not to seek me out. He disputes with me and makes me give birth to all kinds of strange thoughts. I think that often the Devil, solely to torment and vex me, wakes me up while I am sleeping peacefully. My night time combats are much harder for me thanin the day.” and for us sometimes the greatest act of faith we can do is to simply to get up and face another day.

A Spiritual Anti-Virus

How do you rate your thinking on a scale of 1 to 10. Computers basically operate through inputs and outputs, so do our brains. It is easy to feed our brain with rubbish daily. Rubbish in rubbish out, our lives will be mess.

"turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things." Psalm 119:37 NIV

Satan will also target our relationships but don't abandon relationships for human imperfections. Affection is greater than imperfection.

Like a virus created to wreck our computers so Satan’s master strategy is to invade our minds through the things we see around us, the internet, TV, social media. He sets traps for the unwary. He will attack your thoughts even more when your tired, feeling low.

"Do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:27 NIV

Don't give him the opportunity to invade your thoughts. Let God's Word be your ratings guide.

Studies have shown that the average child by the age of 65 will have spent 9 years sitting in front on a screen. The same child, by the age of 65, will have spent just 4 months in church. What kind of result will that have unless they are able to win the battlefield of the mind?

Radio Rhema interviewed an expert on violence on the screen - they said people are being desensitized to violence and death on the screen and that it deeply affects our behaviour and may even cause brain damage. Don't damage your brain by what you watch.

The Power of the Tongue

What do your words say about you? You can assess your thought life by your words. You eventually speak out your thoughts. A person’s mental attitude is revealed by their words.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Proverbs 18:21 NKJV

For example, stop automatically accepting the symptoms of sickness as fact just because you heard the flu was going around and you coughed once.

Automatic Thoughts

We can develop some bad thought habits:

Negative glasses - only focusing on the negative despite the positive all around us.

Exaggeration - blowing up the negative things to be worse than they are.

Predicting failure - feeling responsible for what goes wrong even if it has nothing to do with you

Blaming ourselves - the bus broke down as soon as I got on, it’s my fault.

But God says

"Therefore gird up the loins of your mind" 1 Peter 1:13

"Be renewed in the spirit of your mind." Ephesians 4:23

Your attitudes and thoughts must all be constantly changing for the better.

How to control our thoughts and win the battle of the mind.

1. Sow seeds of godly thinking.

"whatever a man sows he will reap." Galatians 6:7-8

The soil of our minds is neutral, if we sow good seeds we'll get good fruit. Decide what fruit you want to get.

2. Share your struggle with someone else

"Confess your trespasses to one another, pray for one another, that you may be healed." James 5:16

When you keep something in the dark Satan has power over them but when you bring it out into the light the Holy Spirit takes over and then you will find freedom and peace.

3. Do warfare for control of your thoughts

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV

New Zealand has the highest suicide rate for 15-19 year olds in the developed world , the second highest for under 25s. It is evidence that the battle for our minds can be deadly.

If you are struggling with thoughts of hopelessness please remember that with God there is always hope. He iis the God of hope and he can fill you with hope to overflowing. There is nothing hopeless when God is on the scene. Reach out to him and he can fill you with hope. There is an answer, his name is Jesus and he can help you.

Beyond that, get prayer support, talk to your doctor, your mental health provider, call one of the helpline numbers below. There is help out there. There are people who care, people who know what to do but more than that there is a God who loves you. Take authority over wrong thoughts. Change your thinking and change your life.

Have you ever wondered what stops people being saved? Why are some people resistant to gospel? The answer is here:

"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." 2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV

The battlefield for our souls is in our mind. Satan blinds minds. We fight the battle with our words and with our prayers because it is a spiritual battle.

Will you today make a decision to take a look at what you allow into the computer of your mind? To start sowing the seeds of godly thoughts take authority over our thoughts. Call on God, he is waiting for you.
