Repentance Part 2

Repentance Part 2

In 1992 a powerful storm called hurricane Andrew ripped through southern Florida, it flattened thousands of homes and left parts of Florida so devastated they looked like they’d been hit by an atomic bomb.

The Bible tells us that if we will build our lives according to a certain code, which is according to what God’s Word says, then we will remain standing through the storms we all face. Look at one essential aspect of the code.

Hebrews 6:1

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

Repentance is listed as the first foundation doctrine of the Christian faith. One of the most important words in scripture is repentance. The Greek word for Repentance is "metanoeo", which means a decision that leads to a change of mind and then action.

What repentance is not:

i. Not simply an admission of sin.

People can happily say sorry Lord I sinned, but have no intention to change. There should be fruit of repentance.

ii. Not just conviction of sin.

People can be convicted and confess sin, but still not change .

iii. More than worldly sorrow.

People can be sorry for the consequences of their sins, but not for the fact they sinned.

iv. Repentance is not just a decision to do better tomorrow.

v. Not becoming religious.

Attending church, prayer, reading bible, tithing, serving etc…these outward signs don't necessarily mean repentance has taken place.

vi. Not just acknowledgement of God and the truth.

I know of people living ungodly lives with no plans to change, and yet the still say, "I believe in Jesus, I’m a Christian."

5 Aspects of Repentance

i. We continue to repent until we are like Jesus.

Repentance in not a one off action when we get saved. All through life we need to keep repenting as God shows us areas of our lives which are not pleasing to Him. We need a burning desire in our hearts to be continually transformed into the likeness of Jesus.

ii. Loss of first love and passion for God needs to be repented of.

Revelation 2:4-5

4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

God wants a passionate people, with a passion for His Word, for prayer, for serving, giving, and for the church. God calls us to repent of all worldly pursuits and serve Him fully.

Some Christians envy prosperity of wicked, and even pursue the same.

Psalm 49:16-17

16 Do not be afraid when one becomes rich,
When the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away;
His glory shall not descend after him.

iii. The Spirit of the fear of the Lord brings conviction, repentance and revival.

Acts 5:11, 14

11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,

Individuals have been clothed with this anointing. Charles Finney would go to a town or into a factory and people would begin to break down, cry out in repentance, and fall down on streets repentant.

iv. Results in refreshing, and closer walk with God.

It is a fantastic thing when God convicts us and leads us to repentance and refreshing.

Acts 3:19

19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

Proverbs 1:23

23 Turn at my rebuke;
Surely I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.

In the Christian life our goal is not to avoid sin but to recognize it. People who never recognize sin remain unsaved.

v. How God brings us to repentance from disobedience

If we wander into disobedience God in His love for us will do all He can to bring us to repentance. He wants to bless us, and He knows a key is repentance.

a. First step is conviction

We feel conviction in our hearts that what we are doing is not pleasing to God. He will speak by His Holy Spirit or Word.

1 Timothy 4:2

2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

b. Prophetic messenger sent to us.

If we are not hearing God He will send a prophetic messenger to us just as He sent prophet Samuel to Saul when he was in disobedience. A prophetic messenger may not be a prophet; it could be a friend, trusted counsellor, parent, leader, boss or even a child.

c. God will use circumstances to get our attention.

Disobedience opens the door for the enemy to afflict us; God’s protection is removed.

Ephesians 4:27

27 nor give place to the devil.

Revelation 3:19

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

The father heart of God desperately wants the best for all of us.
