One of the most important words found in Scripture and one of the greatest gifts God can ever give us is repentance. Some call it the first word of the gospel – the first command from the lips of Jesus.

Mark 1:14-15
14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdomof God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

The first call for entry into the Kingdom of God and the way to salvation is to repent. We must repent before we can believe. Repentance is also the first of the foundation doctrines of Christianity.

Hebrews 6:1
1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

Listed first, repentance is one of the most important foundations to establish in our lives and a major pillar to support our walk with God. When pressure and storms come, for any building to stand it needs a strong foundation. That is also true for Christians. If we don’t know how strong a persons foundations are, pressure will reveal it. It's vital to build our Christian walk on strong foundations so we stand under pressure.

1. Definition of Repentance

The Greek word is metanoeo, which means "a decision that leads to a change of mind and then action."

William Booth, the general of the Salvation Army, prophesied that the greatest danger for the 20th century church would be a Christianity without repentance. A Christianity without lordship is ultimately a Christianity without Christ.

Revelation chapter 2 and 3 are messages to seven of the early churches. To five of them the first word was to repent.

2. What repentance is not.

i. Not simply an admission of sin.

Matthew 3:8

Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,

If a person has truly repented there will be evidence of changed behavior.

ii. Not just conviction of sin.

Some people make the mistake of thinking they can choose when to repent.

iii. More than worldly sorrow.

People can be sorry for the consequences of their sins, but not for the fact they sinned.

2 Corinthians 7:10

10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

There is no change with worldly sorrow.

v. Not becoming religious.

We can attend church, pray, read the bible, tithe, and serve yet still live worldly life.

vi. Not just the acknowledgement of God and truth.

People can acknowledge God and still live their own lives.

James 2:19

19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

3. Lordship Of Christ

True repentance involves four areas:

Attachments to the world

Allegiances to Satan

Our rights or Lordship of Christ.

Repentance is more than turning away from sin, the world and the devil. It includes giving our whole lives over to God, no longer living for self but for God.

The rich young ruler had no problem with forsaking sin, the world and the devil. But Jesus required lordship. In his case, sell all and give to the poor. He went away sad. He was a godly man, but Jesus was not Lord of his possessions.

Lordship is unconditional surrender to God; no arguments, no demands. "Here I am God, I submit, tell me what to do."

It can be easy for us to live for God while everything is going well, our needs met, and God is blessing us. But what about when it gets tough with injustice, marriage struggles, sickness, financial struggle or prayers not answered.

If Jesus is not Lord people can fall away from God. We can think God has let us down, or it doesn’t pay to serve God,  When Jesus is Lord we are not in it just for the blessings that will come our way.Lordship is tested when what we want conflicts with what God wants.

Examples are dating a non-Christian when the Bible says no. When your plans are not in line with God’s plans. Forgiving someone who offended you. Watching questionable things on TV, movies  or DVDs. Honouring parents.

Lordship means whatever God wants and says, we do and obey. We have no agenda.
