Banner_Sermon_Shepherd.png

A great quality of a shepherd is His love for sheep.

John 10:15
15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

Psalm 23:1-2
1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.

Verse 2 gives a wonderful promise, because sheep tend to be very restless and don't like to lie down.

Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

4 things that are essential for sheep to rest and lie down.

1. Free from fear

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, …
The more we know our shepherd loves us, and the more we love Him, the greater will be our freedom from fear.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

We have authority to command fear to leave us.

2. Free from friction with other members

Because the greatest commandment is love, when we are in conflict with others it is impossible for us to be at rest.

Four keys to help us be free of conflict.

a) Increase your understanding of your offender.

That can help you understand why they did what they did. You may end up saying, "no wonder they did this to me." Find out that persons history, background childhood or parents.

b) Let go expectations

c) Bless your offender, seek their good. pray for them

d) Humble yourself. Humility is possibly the single greatest key to right relationships

Proverbs 13:10

"only by pride comes contention"

3. Free of flies and parasites that torment. (Can speak of evil spirits, bad habits)

What does the shepherd do to help his suffering sheep? He has an oil he applies to protect the sheep from nose flies.

Psalm 23:5 "you anoint my head with oil"

The presence of the Holy Spirit can protect our thought life. It's important to spend time daily with God, and get into His presence.

4. Sheep must be full

Sheep lie down when satisfied with good food. As we daily feed upon Gods Word we can be satisfied and enjoy rest. With sheep their thirst was satisfied by the dew upon grass prior to sunrise when it was still dark. Dew satisfied the sheep enabling it to lie down contentedly all day as the heat of the sun rose.

Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul;

2000 years ago on a hill called Golgotha a man named Jesus produced a red solvent capable of removing dirt from the most soiled life. As the blood of Jesus Christ flowed from his pierced side the greatest work of restoration the world has ever known was underway, as God set about restoring fallen humility into the image of God.
Restore means to bring back to an original state, to a former condition.

Joel 2:25
“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you.
