White Flag - Surrender - Part 1

In a war an army would raise a white flag to indicate their surrender. That would usually mean they come under the rule of another power.

I have been saying in recent months that the fruit in our lives and our church depends on the quality of the soil of our hearts. One area of soil God wants to improve in our hearts and our church is surrender.

Romans 12:1 says "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."

When we talk of surrender we may think of a criminal raising both hands to police, someone yielding in a conflict, a prisoner giving himself in.  But the surrender that I want to talk about leads not to defeat, but victory.

Galatians 2:20 says "“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

We normally like to talk about ourselves. Society from many angles encourages us to center attention on ourselves.

• Socrates said, "Know yourself."

• Psychiatrist says: "Express yourself"
• Many Counselors say: "Love yourself.”

• Hedonist says: "Enjoy Yourself."
• Waiter says indulge yourself.

Personnel manager advises assert yourself

• Leisure time industries will tell you: "Pamper yourselves."

Only Jesus says: "Deny yourself".      Matt 16:24

Why raise a white flag to God? Why surrender?

i. Pathway to life and blessing-   Great white flag words- lose, sow, die, give. Results of such words of surrender are find, reap, live, receive.  Matt 16:25 says "whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Lose life to find it.

2 Cor 9:6 sow bountifully, reap bountifully. Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you.

ii. Avoid crashing-  Matt16:25 says "whoever seeks to save his life will lose it"

A lot of people want full control of their life. God says alter your course 10 degrees to north. When we don’t surrender and alter our course;  sooner or later we crash.

iii. Key to knowing God’s will- Romans 12:2 says "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." It’s after full surrender in v1 that we discover the good, acceptable and perfect will of God. If we don’t fulfill v1 we will never experience v2.

I encourage you like our heroes of faith, regularly build altars of surrender and sacrifice to God.

iv. Personal revival- 2 Chron 7:1-5
When the temple was dedicated, fire falls on the sacrifices. It’s God’s way.

I have found over the years of surrender to God through fasting has resulted in personal revival. Even with this current 3 days prayer and fasting God has been working in my life, repentance that leads to refreshing.

What are we to surrender? Actually everything. Present your bodies a living sacrifice. Specifically what would that include?

a. Your heart- God first in relationships, passions, desires. Personal aspirations. We have things in this life that we just want to do. They need to be submitted to the lordship of Christ.  If He approves then we can go ahead. Problem is if we will never surrender all, we will pursue personal aspirations that are not God’s will. There are places you want to go, things you want to see, goals you want to reach. But you need to surrender all to God.

b. Priorities- we need to surrender our priorities to God and discover His priorities.

c. Gifts and abilities- These need to be surrendered first and foremost to the work of God and advancing His Kingdom. We will be judged by God as to the extent to which we used our talents to serve Him.

d. Finances- Some say the last white flag Christians raise, the last area to come under the lordship of Jesus is their wallets, finances. Sadly 40% Christians never give to church, approx. 27% tithe.

John Wesley- “not how much of my money will I give to God but how much of God’s money will I keep to myself”

e. Our time- Give our best time to God. Surrender our very best time to God.

f. Surrender your will. Let His will be done. Not our will, but His will.
