White Flag - Surrender - Part 2

To recap, in times of war an army would raise a white flag to indicate their surrender.

Romans 12:1 : I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

The reason we should fully surrender to God is because of His mercies toward us.

1. Jesus Himself lived a surrendered life  John 6:38

Jesus never did anything on his own. He made no move, spoke no word without being instructed by the Father. Jesus' surrender is the model for us to follow.  As a man Jesus chose to fully surrender His will to Father:

John 10:17-18 : “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

Jesus was telling us, "Make no mistake, this act of self-surrender is totally within my power to do. I'm choosing to lay down my life. I'm not doing it because some man told me to. My Father gave me the choice to pass up this cup and avoid the cross. But I chose to do it, out of full surrender to him."

We have the choice to surrender and enter into all that God has for us or not.

2. A Stephen crosses your path- When God wants to take you to greater surrender and devotion, He will put a Stephen in your path.

 Acts 6:15, 7:55-58

Paul a religious zealot was confronted with Stephen whose face shone with God’s glory. Imagine the impact this had on Saul. Maybe Stephen drew Him to Jesus. Over the years God has put devoted Christians in my path. They have challenged me and drawn me closer to Jesus.

Who has God placed near you who has great devotion, surrender, sacrifice, passion for God? Take note, they are a message to you, calling you to greater surrender. These people are among the greatest gifts and blessings from God to you. Churches that demonstrate and call people to greater surrender and devotion are great treasures on the earth.

3. Beware of complacency settling in-

We can be in danger of emphasizing comfort over Calvary. Surrender has a goal of releasing you into greater joy, freedom and blessing than you have ever imagined. That's the way Christianity works.

God is looking for volunteers, not conscripts. Conscripts are motivated by law; volunteers are motivated by love. For eg: No one should ever have to beg and pressure us to serve in kids church,  work with young people, give to the cause of Christ, visit the sick, lonely or serve others. We should be begging for the privilege!

4. Suffering can lead to surrender

Every believer will face some suffering. First key to handling it is to not be shocked. It is the biblical pattern of scripture. Second key is to realize that God is always up to something good even if you cant see it. Rom 8:28 we know that all things work together for good to those who love God.

Eg- The impact of persecution and suffering is astounding. Often explosive growth is seen as suffering leads to surrender to God.

Eg-  In Iran churches are experiencing the fastest growth in world. Estimated annual growth of 20%. Some sources say the church grown from a few 100 in 1979 to 5 million.

The third key is to let suffering drive you to greater surrender to God.

5. Surrender brings contentment-
Many Christians live in continual discontentment. They're never satisfied with what they have.
Contentment was huge test for Paul.

Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:

Phil 4:12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

6. Surrender will leave a godly legacy- Your surrender to God will leave a legacy for those in your family and those around you. You will be a Stephen in their lives, challenging them and driving them in deeper surrender to God.
